I grew up in a small town in Northern Ontario where outdoor activity was what we did for fun. In the summer we rode our bikes to get where we wanted to go. I played hockey but I tended to do some less common sports. I loved cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and water skiing. I took up curling when I was 12 and that was the sport that I became most competitive at.
I did start running in my late teens and found a good run was the best therapy for a bad day. I also realized that fitness was important to a healthy lifestyle.
Move ahead several years to a real job, a wife and 3 sons. I wanted our boys to enjoy physical activity so I encouraged them to try as many sports as they could and my wife and I joined in. In 2000 the boys decided they wanted to do the local Kids of Steel Triathlon. That led me into the sport of triathlon, 10yrs on the organizing committee of the Huronia Triathlon and membership in the Midland Triathlon club (where I got my first swimming lesson).
Triathlon made me realize that I could actually do endurance sport and I really liked it. I have since done ultra distance running, ski marathons, countless cycling charity events and triathlons of all distances. My greatest accomplishment in Triathlon is completing an Ironman with each of our 3 sons. Sport is a family event for the Keen’s.
I am a Certified Fitness Appraiser at work and hope to get my 30 yr fitness pin this year. I enjoy getting people involved in sport and love to see their successes. I am the guy who lends people gear, stops to fix strangers flat tires or talks people through the tough patches just to make sure they finish.
What I like most about triathlon, is the people. I have met so many amazing people along the way and can honestly say that in every race that I have been in, I have made a new friend. (Generally through adversity……..theirs, mine or both).
Barrelman is very special race to me. I love the course, the atmosphere and the way that John and his Multisport team make sure that the athletes enjoy the “experience”. Lets’ face it, I am not going to win anything but I totally enjoy the event, and so will you. I totally “blew up” last year but loved every minute of it.
This year Barrelman will be a family event again. My wife, and sons will all be participating and our youngest son’s girlfriend will be doing her first ever Tri. The goal…………Have fun and finish!
