I’m so excited to be part of the 2018 Barrelman Ambassador team. I’m 43 and have been doing triathlons for 5 years. I keep a busy schedule between working at a local hospital, my own business and volunteer coaching for a local begin-to-run program and still find time to spend with my wonderful husband.
After a rather non-athletic childhood, aside from running track in junior high school, I began running again in 2011. I made a couple of running friends who also did triathlon and encouraged me to try. I did my first sprint distance race in 2013 and first 70.3 as my second race. I have done at least one sprint race every year since and wanted to try a different 70.3 more suited to my abilities. Then I saw an ad for Barrelman.
My first Barrelman race in 2015 was AMAZING. Since I’m not the strongest swimmer, the calm water in the Welland Canal was a huge selling point for me choosing the race along with the flat bike course. I think it makes the perfect 70.3 for athletes like me, who tend to be in the back of the pack. The scenery was spectacular and everything went so smoothly. Even though I was one of the final finishers of the race, they still provided so much support and made me feel like a rock star when I crossed that finish line. It went so well that I knew I had to come back again for my next half distance race and have talked so fondly of my experience, I’m bringing several friends with me this year want to make it their first half distance race too. I’m overjoyed to be able to share this experience with them and with all the athletes and share the encouragement and inspiration I’ve received on my journey.
