Of the three disciplines of triathlon besides the finish line, my favourite is the bike, then the swim and then there is that pesky run. In high school I competed in basketball and javelin. I have completed over 100 races of various lengths from 5km fun runs to a full iron distance twice! I have even run up the CN tower chasing my second kid. I did not start competed in triathlons until I was over 40 years old. I have taken every place from first in my age group to dead last on the course. I have also dealt with many injuries and have gone into the aquabike category many times. If you have an injury I probably have a tip or two of how to train around it.
I train consistently 5 to 6 days a week usually very early in the morning before anyone needs me. My three boys have all done some sports. My husband is into strength training and I am the cardio queen. As a school teacher I believe all people should move and I run a children’s marathon club to help foster children’s healthy relationships with physical activity.
I have participated in various multisport events and I have done the Barrelman many times, including when it was held in Welland and called the Welland Half. I am excited to participate once again in an event that I have made so many wonderful memories at. From the people I have met, the support of the wonderful crew and volunteers, and the absolutely stunning bike/run courses and who wouldn’t like to follow that sweet line under the water for the entire swim!
Come out and try something new or come again and see what new surprises the team has for us. Looking forward to the journey. My motto is never say never ’cause you never know.
